AN ANZAC TRIBUTE

to the brave women nurses imprisoned and died during WW11

“AChoired Sound” at St Joseph’s Neutral Bay

On Sunday 28 April, the Sunday after ANZAC Day, we were very fortunate to be entertained with a very touching musical reflection on the brave women nurses who were imprisoned and died during WWII.   The performance, by the A Capella men’s choir “AChoired Sound”, lent an emotional & poignant edge to the narration by chorister Graham Tweedie, whose father had been a Prisoner of War in Changi and on the Burma Railway.

“AChoired Sound” began in 2000 as the St Aloysius Fathers’ Choir and has grown and flourished to include a wide-ranging repertoire, from the sacred to contemporary pop, ballads & classics.  Although originally comprising fathers with sons at St Aloysius College, it now includes anyone who just ‘loves to sing’.  As well as the joy of making music, a feature of our choir is the enjoyment and fun we experience, just from each other’s company.

Each year the choir’s regular ‘gigs’ includes the ANZAC Day lunch performance for families of the 2nd/20th Battalion – who were prisoners of war in Changi, as well as the Blackheath Choral Festival in August, and a number of Christmastide performances.  There are always other ad hoc occasions where the choir performs, which have included the ABCs ‘Sing Out Sydney’, as well as the sound track music for the Channel 9 TV mini-series production “ANZACS”, and weddings and funerals and invitation Masses throughout the state.

“AChoired Sound” is always looking for new members.  We meet for practice most Wednesday nights from 7.30pm to 9.30pm at the Ron Dyer Centre, North Sydney, and would love you to join us.
